We asked, "how do you think the school could better handle students’ mental health?"
Here's what the students had to say.
Here's what the students had to say.
"The school could better handle students mental health by understanding that lack of motivation derives from underlying conditions, instead of just "not wanting" to work. School should take its place after mental health and not vice versa."
"Understand that if we have bad grades and don't do work it's probably not because we're lazy, but because there is more going on, and that if our mental health is bad then we won't have to motivation to get out of bed do school work"
"I think advisory could be a more purposeful time for students to choose their advisory group (a group of people they're comfortable with) so they can genuinely share things that are bothering them."
"I think having designated mental health days where students can do what they will during the day. I know EMHS had one and it would probably be beneficial for students. I also think that there needs to be more than one designated mental health professional affiliated with the school so that the load isn't all placed on Dr. Cantwell."
"Working to decrease the stigma around mental health and certain mental health illnesses."
"honestly i’m not sure, i just don’t think teachers get that it’s a struggle to even get out of beds some days let alone sit down at a computer for 6+ hours every week day to do work"
"During this time, school is very hard for me at some times. I don't want to say this because I'm lazy, but giving less work could help a lot for a student like me. I'm involved in a lot of extracurricular activities and have to apply for things like jobs and volunteer programs. Sometimes it's hard for me to worry about that and school work at the same time. Even so, I know it helps with my academics."
